Cairo’s clocks are forward in 2026. The IANA database lists Egypt under Africa/Cairo at UTC+3 with the abbreviation EEST, meaning daylight saving time is active. That puts the country one hour ahead of Johannesburg, two hours ahead of Lagos, and three hours ahead of Accra. It also means Egypt currently matches Nairobi and Addis Ababa, not Tripoli or Khartoum.

The status is not guaranteed. Egypt has scrapped DST, reinstated it, scrapped it again, and reinstated it again inside a single decade. What the database shows today can be reversed by decree.

Egypt’s on-again, off-again DST

The government abolished daylight saving in 2015. For eight years the country stayed on Eastern European Time (UTC+2) year-round.

Then 2023 brought a U-turn. Officials reinstated the clock change as an electricity-saving measure during an economic squeeze, claiming it would cut peak energy use.

In 2024, DST was abolished again. The reversal did not stick. By 2026 the IANA database again records EEST, implying the clocks moved forward once more.

The pattern is clear: Egypt’s DST status is volatile. Check it annually. Do not assume.

What EEST actually means

EEST stands for Eastern European Summer Time. It is UTC+3.

The name causes confusion. EEST sounds like a European zone, but Egypt uses it during daylight saving. East African countries call the same offset EAT and apply it year-round. When Egypt observes DST, Cairo and Nairobi show the same hours. They are not the same zone. Kenya never changes clocks. Egypt might.

How the time difference shifts

With DST active, Egypt aligns with East Africa Time. Cairo matches Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Dar es Salaam.

Cairo is one hour ahead of Johannesburg and Harare. Two hours ahead of Lagos and Kinshasa. Three hours ahead of Accra and Abidjan.

During European summer, Cairo runs one hour ahead of London. From New York the gap is six hours during US Eastern Daylight Time, seven hours during US Eastern Standard Time.

The Johannesburg relationship is the one that trips people up. When Egypt drops back to standard time, Cairo and Johannesburg show the same hour. With DST active, Cairo jumps an hour ahead. A 10:00 meeting in Cairo lands at 09:00 in Johannesburg during DST, but at 10:00 when Egypt falls back.

Egypt DST and your schedule

For remote teams with members in Cairo and southern Africa, pin the Johannesburg difference before sending the calendar invite. A recurring meeting set during DST will shift if Egypt abolishes it mid-cycle.

Prayer times are calculated from solar position, so the call to prayer does not move with the clock. But business hours and iftar timing interact with the official time. During Ramadan, shorter working hours in Muslim-majority areas compound any DST confusion.
